Bhutan came under Tibetan rule from the north in the 16th century. The
British influenced Bhutan in the 19th century as it colonized India. A
monarchy (rule by kings and queens) was set up in 1907 and then it became a
protectorate of Britain in 1910. Finally the country became independent in
1949 and India has been assisting it with foreign relations and giving aid.
Airline service is provided between Bhutan and India and there is a better
road network. Most of the people of Bhutan are subsistence farmers and
nomads. This means that they produce only enough to live on with little if
any surplus.
